People have used garlic for thousand of years as both food and medicine as well as to ward off vampires. Well, although modern research has not confirmed yet that rubbing garlic on doorknobs and window frames can protect us against vampires or evil spirits, it has confirmed what our ancestors believed about the health benefits of this herb: its consumption can protect us from many ailments.

Unfortunately, for several decades, the widespread use of antibiotics has ignored the medical properties of garlic. Lately, however, interest in garlic has escalated and nowadays research is focusing on the role garlic plays in the prevention and control of heart disease.

How can garlic help prevent and control heart disease? Through the following mechanisms:

1. Garlic can lower your high blood pressure
High blood pressure is one of the health conditions where garlic treatment brings the fastest results. Studies suggest that garlic dilates blood vessel walls, increasing the diameter of the arteries. Garlic also helps prevent high blood pressure by stopping blood cells from sticking together.

In a clinical trial, the subjects ingested standardized garlic powder capsules for four years. The results showed a 9 to 18 percent reduction in plaque volume and a 7 percent decrease in blood pressure. This resulted in an increase in the diameter of the arteries by 4 percent, which is associated with an 18 percent improvement of blood flow. These effects of garlic resulted in a risk reduction for heart attacks and strokes by more than 50 percent.

2. Garlic can lower your blood cholesterol
Studies indicate that the populations that eat garlic consistently have the lowest level of blood cholesterol. Pennsylvania State University showed that men with high total blood cholesterol were able to lower its concentration by 7 percent and LDL, the bad cholesterol, by 10 percent when taking garlic supplements. The study indicated that the sulfur compounds in garlic were responsible for the results, especially S-allylcysteine, which prevents the formation of cholesterol by the liver.

3. Garlic can lower your blood platelets
Platelets are tiny cells in the blood that, when arteries get damaged, rush to the lesion site to repair them. They become sticky and form a clot. Unfortunately, although platelets’ intentions are good, these clots are the first step toward the formation of a thrombus, an accumulation of platelets and protein. A thrombus may in time obstruct the flow of blood in the blood vessels. Studies have shown that small doses of garlic can prevent platelets from becoming sticky and piling up together. In a study carried out by Liverpool John Moores University, the subjects experienced a reduction of platelet stickiness after ingesting 5 milliliters of garlic extract per day for 13 weeks.

4. Garlic can reduce your plaque in the arteries
Plaque starts to form when arteries are damaged. It is made up of mounds of fat and debris deposited in the wall of the arteries that reduce the space available for blood to circulate. Plaque keeps growing and with time may block the flow of blood in the arteries.

One study showed that continuous intake of high doses of garlic powder capsules for four years reduced the plaque volume by 5 to 18 percent. It is also a fact that most people between 50 and 80 years of age have an increase in the amount of plaque. During the four years this study lasted, the volume of plaque remained constant in people within this age frame demonstrating that garlic has a preventive as well as a curative role in heart disease.

5. Garlic is an antioxidant
Garlic has been shown to protect blood vessels from the destructive effects of free radicals. Ankara University of Turkey conducted a study to investigate the effects of garlic extract on the oxidation of red blood cells. For six months, 11 patients with atherosclerosis ingested a daily dose of 1 milliliter of garlic extract per kilogram of body weight. The study showed a reduction on the level of oxidation of red blood cells in the patients.

How to get the medicinal properties out of garlic

To get the medicinal properties of fresh garlic, however, you must follow several steps, a “protocol” as I call it before consuming it. Here is what you need to do

- Peel the cloves
- Cut them in small pieces
- Crush them in a mortar.
- After you have crushed the garlic, let it sit uncovered in the mortar for 10 or 15 minutes before you put it in the food. This allows the formation of allicin, a compound necessary to unleash the medicinal properties of garlic.

Conclusion
Remember that people around the world, especially those who enjoy few chronic diseases, use garlic extensively in their daily diets. A truly wonder of nature with more than 200 chemical compounds, garlic has been a crucial contributor to the curative effects of the Mediterranean diet. So, how about going back to the basics and put some garlic in your life as a preventive measure?

How do we help our boys express their feelings and grow up to be unafraid of them? How do we help them understand that they can be masculine - and have feelings too? How do we help them survive the tests of masculinity intact and on their own terms? In the book Raising Cain, co-authors Michael Thompson, Ph.D. and Dan Kindlon, Ph.D. present the following strategies, designed to help parents nurture and protect the emotional lives of their boys, to respect their interests and needs, and help them grow up to be caring, intelligent, successful men.

Give boys permission to have an internal life, approval for the full range of human emotions, and help in developing an emotional vocabulary so that they may better understand themselves and communicate more effectively with others. “The simple idea here is that you consciously speak to a boy’s internal life all the time, whether he is aware of it or not. You respect it, you take it into account, you make reference to it, you share your own. There is something of the prophecy fulfilled here. That is, if you act as if your son has an internal life - if you assume that he does, along with every other human being - then soon he will take it into account.”

Recognize and accept the high activity level of boys and give them safe boy places to express it. “Many parents of boys do embrace the physicality of boys…some do not. Most teachers of boys also love boys; some, unfortunately, do not. Boys are tremendously sensitive to adults who do not have a reasonable tolerance level for boy energy, and when they do sense that a person has a low threshold of boy tolerance, they usually respond to it as a challenge…Boys need to learn how to manage their physicality to do no harm, but they need not be shamed for exuberance.”

Talk to boys in their language - in a way that honors their pride and their masculinity. Be direct with them; use them as consultants and problem solvers. “Because boys are mis-educated to fear excessive feeling and vulnerability, it is important to communicate with them in a way that honors their wish for strength and does not shame them…Is communicating with boys sometimes difficult? Yes, it often is. Is it impossible? Almost never. Only with the most angry, contemptuous, and suspicious boys is conversation impossible. If you are willing to ask consultative questions, put your emotional cards on the table, and not be disappointed by brief answers, you can communicate with boys.

Help him work out what he’s feeling.

After your child has calmed down from a tantrum, gently talk him through it. Ask him what was bothering him and why: “Did you think I wasn’t listening to you?” Dr Sal Severe, psychologist and author of How to Behave so your Preschooler Will Too, points out that, like adults, young children have a variety of feelings: “They need to be taught how to label and manage those feelings, especially anger.”

In order to do this your child needs an emotion vocabulary - and you can provide that by asking questions such as, “Were you angry?”, “Did you feel sad?”, “Were you frightened?”

Teach him to empathize.

Young children often pay little mind to the effect their behavior might have on everyone else. If your child hits, bites or kicks, get down to his level and calmly ask him how he would feel if someone did that to him. Prompt him to give it some thought by saying things like, “If your sister kicked you like that it would hurt you and make you cry.”

Brainstorm solutions

If your child doesn’t have the verbal skills to assert himself in a non-violent way, then teach him. Kids love pretend play and you can use that to teach them how to react to the things that tend to trigger their rage. Role-play a situation that would normally have your child going into meltdown and work out how he can resolve it without his fists and feet flying.

Practice what to say

Offer him verbal alternatives to his rage: “Maybe you could have said this. Why don’t you try that next time?” If trouble is brewing, remind him by saying, “Use your words, Tom” - and be sure to praise him when he does, perhaps via a Reward Chart with a happy face for every day he doesn’t hit or by saying something like, “I’m so happy you didn’t lose your temper when Alex was playing with your toys.”

Teach him how to calm down, not up

Dr Sal Severe recommends deep breathing as an easy technique young children can use to defuse anger and Supernanny has also used this method. He suggests showing your child what to do by placing your hand on your chest and getting him to do the same while taking in two deep breaths. The hand on the chest serves a handy visual cue that you can use to remind your child to take a step back from what’s bothering him: just do it if you see him start to get frustrated.

Lay it on the line

Sometimes young children need it spelled out so they can see how their behavior relates back to Mum and Dad pulling them up all the time. Your child reacts aggressively when you try to enforce rules and limits - so he gets told off. Explain to him in simple terms the connection between those two events: “Jack, being told off makes you cranky. But if you keep hitting and biting, I’m going to keep telling you off. If you stop doing it then I won’t tell you off.”

Unplug him

Children who see aggressive or violent behavior played out on the TV screen or in computer games tend to be more aggressive when they play. “If your child is consistently aggressive, limit his exposure to it in the media,” advises Sal Severe. “If he does see it on TV, explain that hitting isn’t a nice way to act and doesn’t solve problems. Reinforce the message by choosing storybooks and TV shows that promote kindness.”

Operate a zero-tolerance policy

Do not tolerate aggressive behavior at all, in any way, shape or form. As with every other aspect of parenting, consistency is key. The only way to stop your child from being aggressive is to make a House Rule that aggression is not acceptable.

Don’t smack him (hitting your child)

If you’re in the habit of smacking your child in the heat of the moment , you need to express your own frustration more constructively. “Smacking in anger teaches children to strike out when they’re angry,” says Sal Severe. “Seeing that you don’t exercise self-control when you’re angry makes them think they don’t have to either.”

Manage your own anger

If you go off like a rocket at the slightest thing, it’s likely your child will too. “Your children learn to manage their anger by watching the way you manage your own,” cautions Dr Sal Severe. “It’s a sobering thought, but anger habits are learned.”

The irony is that an aggressive child can often be a major trigger for parents to explode, but try not to let your own anger build up. “Deal with it as soon as possible, using a calm voice to express how you feel rather than yelling,” says Sal Severe. “It’ll have way more impact. And just as you expect your child to apologize for bad behavior, get into the habit of apologizing to him if you lose your temper inappropriately.”

If your child’s aggressive behavior is disrupting your home and putting family members or others at risk, and he reacts explosively to even the mildest discipline techniques, speak to your GP or Health Visitor. She may be able to refer you to a child psychologist or counselor who can teach you new ways of interacting with your child that will help you manage his anger more effectively.

Are you having trouble not knowing for sure whether a guy likes the same way as you do? Well, it can be a real puzzle trying to figure out whether a guy likes you or not. Sometimes we might think that he does like us but the fact might be the opposite.

So, if you are doubt and you always ask yourself whether he is interested in you or not, then you need some clues for him to make you sure. Actually, there are several signs to find out if a guy likes you. Read on to find out what these signs are and you can tell whether a guy likes you or not.

1). Take notice of how many times he looks at you

Do you catch his eye every time you glance at him? If he is looking at you frequently and flashes his pearly whites when you look at him, there is definitely some interest on his part. A quick turn of his head when you’ve caught him looking at you is also a good sign.

2). Check for signs of nervousness

Nervous laughter, sweaty palms, fidgeting, looking away quickly when you notice if he is watching you are all good signs of an attraction towards you and that he is nervous about making an impression on someone he fancies. Also notice if you call his name, does his head snap around right away or does it turn gradually?

3). Note his body language

Does his upper torso seem to be pointed towards you when you’re around? Are his feet pointed toward you? Does he ever mimic your movement? Ever fidget? These are all signs that a boy gives off subconcioiusly that are signs of interest-and he doesn’t even realize that he’s doing it! That’s the fun part. But do look out for those kinds of signs and anything else that’s non verbal.

4). He seems to find reasons to be with or near you

Does he find ways to be closer to your body, near you, sit close or on the same side of the room as you? Does he want your opinion? Cares what you have to say? Does he seem to be around you often, when he can? Does his face lighten up or seem to go from stress to unstressed when you walk in or say hello? Beware, these are all the good signs that a guy probably likes you so much.

5). Think back on conversations you have had with him

Does he remember the little things that you said? Guys remember little insignificant pieces of conversations when they like you. They are letting you know that they are interested in everything about you. This is a good sign of his desire to have a relationship with you.

6). Pay attention to his friends

If they know he’s interested in you, they might tease him subtly when you’re around, hint to you that he likes you, or even try to find out if you like him. Study their reactions to your presence - do they smile? Do they turn to him? Do they smirk in a way that suggests they know something that you don’t? If so, then there’s a good chance that they know that he really does like you.

7). Check with your friends

Guys often take a greater interest in a girl’s friends as a way to get closer to her. Find out if he is asking about you when you are not around. Sometimes guys are too shy to express their interest in you, so they will go about it in a roundabout way.

Finally, to make sure whether he likes you or not then you can go ahead and ask him. Do you fear rejection? Well, he can say no to you, that is for sure, but think a little. You will save a lot of time and you will not daydream without any guarantees that something will ever happen between you two.

To keep away from any embarrassing situations, try to ask the right questions. If he says he does not like you, you may say the same thing and treat everything as a joke. Or, if you ask him if he likes you as a friend, then you can also strengthen this supposition by saying that you also care for him as a friend. See? You get out of it elegantly and smoothly. But if he likes you and not as his friend, then you are on the right path.

Once you know fairly sure that he does not likes you, it is time to take action. Put together a step-by-step plan for getting him to fall for you. But, how to make him feel attracted to me?

Well, there’s a way around to make him fall for you. The way around is to start doing the things that always work to create INTENSE ATTRACTION inside a man. You need to know what it is that makes a man feel this kind of attraction for you. You need to learn the specifics tips for how to create that kind of attraction inside a man, whether you’re just meeting him, or you’ve been together for months or years.

When you do the things that are sure to make a man feel that gut level attraction that goes deeper than just his physical attraction and desires, then he’ll do and try anything to be close to you. Is it amazing? Yes, of course. What you have to do is to learn. It’s a skill and it is not a magic, and I honestly believe that any woman can learn it if she wants. Good luck!

So, if you want to learn the keys to making men feel ATTRACTION for you and want him to be around you for the long term, then you need to visit Catch And Keep Him

In 1929 a surreal filmmaker, Louis Bunuel and an upstart artist named Salvador Dali collaborated to make the most outrageous avant-garde film of their times, “Un Chien Andalou”. This silent film made almost 100 years ago, stunned audiences with incredibly provocative imagery and remains a treasure to studied film aficionados. Yet as the century rounded a corner the clock had already melted on B&W silent films and Hollywood spectaculars, fast cuts and special effects crowd out vintage films for attention.

This original silent film was shown without a sound score to audiences throughout the early part of the 20th century. In the late 1940’s and 50’s Bunuel added a sparse sound track of classical music played at some performances. In the early 60’s it was again released with a classic soundtrack. It is agreed by most reviewers of the piece that without a soundtrack capturing the full spirit of the film, with its avant-garde kaleidoscopic imagery, makes the film unreachable for a modern audience. The film, if found, is in the dark corners with lost art films as quick musical shorts and stunning action films compete for the film audience.

Chicago composer and musician Richard Black has taken the astounding Bunuel/Dali visual masterpiece and blended an original soundtrack conceiving a new classic; a modern tour de force. “The Modern Dog” by Richard Black has embodied a creative blend of rock and electronic that pulses to the visual rhythm created by Bunuel and Dali, creating a new layer of aural pleasure specifically for this work.

The DVD is a Richard A. Siegel production distributed by Video Seconds. The DVD includes three new music videos, two of which were also inspired by the Avant-garde classic and are included with the extras on the Video Seconds DVD release. These extracted and modernized classics capture a new audience to a symbol of avant-garde through the music video medium. The DVD, appropriately named “The Modern Dog, Un Chien Andalou” is renewed into modern times.

I call it the “Google Juggle”. Much has been written about the power and success of Google over recent years (including a monumentally successful IPO). Although Google is constantly attempting to re-invent itself through creative applications and corporate acquisitions, its core business remains Search. Search is its strength and Search is its largest revenue stream. Google is dominant in both Organic (free) and Pay-Per-Click searching.

Successful SEO involves the constant juggling of PPC and Organic search. It’s a balancing act. The Google Juggle! The ultimate goal is to eliminate or minimize PPC as a result of Organic Search Optimization.

The formula from Google’s standpoint is fairly simple. The greater your organic search success, the less PPC revenue for Google. Conversely, the lower the organic or natural success, the more you must rely on a Pay-Per-Click campaigns. Since Google controls both sides of the equation, the site owner is left to do the “Google Juggle”. Since Organic Search does not provide any direct income to Google (or any of the other major Search Engines), it is in Google’s best interest to make sure that you rely on at least some PPC for your overall SEO Success. No one is saying (at least not this author) that Google intentionally represses your position in their organic search engine. Let’s just say that the Formula for success is more closely guarded that the formula for Coca Cola.

During the initial phase of the Google Juggle, the PPC ‘ball’ is more prominent than the organic one. Realistically, it can take 6 to 8 weeks for a site to begin to crawl up the search engines after initial submission. So you should plan on a fairly robust (Read Expensive) PPC campaign. Google does a great job in managing your budget on a daily or monthly budget. Say you can afford $300 for your first month’s PPC. Google will dole out your Paid Links so that they eat up about $10 of your budget each day. If you can afford more, Google will gladly spend it.

Now comes the fun part. As your organic searchability begins to ‘kick in’, you can rely less on the PPC ball and start throwing the organic ball higher in the air. As time goes by, and assuming you follow a well-designed Organic Search strategy, you can rely less and less on PPC and possibly eliminate it altogether. This would be the dream ending of your Google juggling act. While Google is still your main source of web traffic, it will be at little or no cost. But remember, Organic Search is hard work and relies on a disciplined and deliberate approach.

Home decor styles are so widely varied - from elegant to country and everything in between. Some people don’t really have a certain style, they just have an eclectic mixture of it all. Others want every single piece to match, down to the last little detail.

What style of home decor do you prefer? People have such varied tastes. What may be absolutely gorgeous to one person may not be attractive at all to another. The only thing that truly matters is if you are comfortable in your own home. Here is some information on popular home decor styles and the kind of atmosphere they convey.

Shabby chic is an extremely popular choice, and is very airy and romantic. The colors for this type of decor are usually pale and muted, from off white and dusty mauve to a pale celery green. This choice for home decor is often chosen by women who are not married, and is very feminine looking.

Asian decor is bold and exciting! Black and red mixed with gold are very common colors for this style of home decor. Clean lines and heavy pieces are often associated with asian decor. Many people have a bold ceramic tile floor that may be done with touches of red or black. Not for the timid, this style is very distinguished.

Country decor is a constant favorite, especially in the south. With bright colors such as yellow and red, many people use sunflowers, roosters, and cows when decorating in this style of home decor. Country blue and rust are also commonly used. This type of decor provides a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Western decor seems to be an all time favorite! Giving the feeling of wide open spaces, western home decor often has an abundance of wood accents. Wooden floors and exposed wooden beams are common in western decor. Wrought iron candle holders, western figurines and wall accents such as wagon wheels are often used in this type of home decor.

These are just a few examples of the many styles of home decor. Of course there are many others such as elegant, southwestern and contemporary. Everyone has their own personal choice for what they enjoy and want their home to convey.

No matter what your style, you should always choose what you love - after all, it IS your home! Choosing the right home decor theme is important, as your home is the first impression you give your visitors.

The United States Housing Act of 1937 established the public housing program. Many families throughout the years to today have benefited from the availability of what is termed “safe, clean, and affordable” housing. Originally it was established as a stepping stone for families and many immigrants in addition to returning military personnel. Today subsidized public housing and Section 8 housing account for a multi-billion dollar program. Is is still effective? Good for taxpayers and low income citizens? Good for the neighborhoods?

It can be said that it might be a system of entrapment for minorities, a main source of taxpayer waste, and an unsuccessful means of “balancing out” income and racial distribution.

There are also many success stories from Public Housing. There are many who have been former PHA (Public Housing Authority) residents who moved up the ladder of society and had good family roots there. Many of HUD’s (US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development) programs have been ever changing tax wastes and some have been quite successful. Programs have led to job training, family counseling, homeownership, and educational benefits. In this age of rising costs, broken families, and rising crime in poor neighborhoods, paying 30% of your income for rent in safe, affordable housing has been an attractive alternative for years. You will find many who say with a smile that their days in Public Housing were remembered with dignity and pride, in spite of the crime and the lack of consistent, effective management, tenant screening, and maintenance.

Congress sets the laws governing subsidized housing as state officials govern the laws for their programs. Unfortunately, they have made the system so complex, people make a living just interpreting and keeping up with the ever changing rules. During the course of many decades, programs are unfinished as elections create political change and new governing bodies scrap their predecessors “ineffective” programs.

Recent decades have evidenced a great reduction in the number of Public Housing units. The cost of redevelopment and upkeep on the property skyrocketed. HUD expanded its Section 8 Program to use as “replacement” subsidies for many of the demolished housing. Applicants would use Section 8 Vouchers to take their subsidy to participating private Landlords anywhere in the area. The Landlords would get 30% of the tenant’s income plus a subsidy based on the current area market for the apartment. This results in the discontinuance of property upkeep for HUD and assistance with post 9/11 budget reductions government-wide. Public Housing is being scrutinized even more today with a performance funding and management system that will no doubt eliminate many family and some elderly apartments. HUD appears to be focused on homeownership today with limited success.

OPINION and CONCLUSIONS:

Addressing the needs of Families:

The nation’s poor neighborhoods where gangs roam, crack is sold, and unsafe broken down housing is found continue to exist and grow in many cities. Many good citizens remain there and try to improve conditions. There are many neighborhoods far worse that any Public Housing Development. Many Public Housing residents do not want to move into the neighborhoods that the Section 8 Program offers and are unwilling and unprepared for homeownership.

In short HUD is pursuing an ineffective path. Homeownership is politically correct and provides HUD with an effective marketing tool that really does not amount to a plan to assist great numbers of poor people. Attempts at “social engineering” to create mixed racial communities by offering Section 8 vouchers has had limited success. In some cases, the Housing Agency responsible to inspect the Section 8 landlord property has not followed program rules and resulting in subsidizing unsafe, and sometimes dangerous apartments.

The volumes and volumes of laws and regulations governing subsidized housing should be destroyed. A new simplified system should be initiated that includes addressing some of the main problems in housing. Congress has determined to focus on housing only by cutting non-housing services. The idea is that there is not enough funding to really address the problems of the poor who need housing. Family support, jobs, training, education, security are distant thoughts. Public housing support agencies, security forces, meaningful job programs, education, and general social support are now abandoned.

The Section 8 Program has both positive and negative results. Many neighborhoods once dominated by homeownership are now rental units for the lucrative Section 8 Program. Middle income neighborhoods with a history of ethnic and social tradition are now mixed racially with the poor and some bring their social and economic problems with them. The goal should be to raise the quality of life for minorities and all the poor so they can blend in seamlessly with existing neighbors and not “forced” economic and social integration.

In conclusion what I am proposing here is a new Public Housing Program where the original intent of providing a “stepping stone” for families is created. All areas of family life should be addressed integrating education, jobs, family support, and follow-up. End new homeownership and new Section 8 programs. Stop trying to “force” family success and mastermind social integration. Make Public Housing the showcase for the rise of the poor American family. Screen the applicants properly and create a mentor program for those who are not yet ready to be part of the new neighborhood. Fund it with the elimination of wasteful government spending, the Space Program, foreign aide, free trade agreements, and the War! The price tag is worth it. Ask some of the egotistical movie and TV stars to make their contributions in the US! Have them sponsor a Public Housing Development. It’s great to help the disaster victims in Asia or build a school in Africa, and what is that all about when our little boys and girls can’t even go out of the house or to school without being in fear.

Create a gradient system where the family is supported in every way and the subsidy eventually drops away. I think America needs to heal itself first. It starts with a roof over your head.

If you’re looking for a natural way to treat panic attack, making some small changes to your daily routine can be a great help. These simple ways can help you reduce anxiety and stop panic attacks from happening. They also have the added benefit of improving your health and quality of life overall. Feeling better about yourself and more confident enables you to handle stress more efficiently rather than doubting your ability to cope or living in a constant state of fear.

Take a look at what you eat. If your diet consists mainly of heavily processed foods, then this could be contributing to your anxiety. Refined grains and sugars are not only unhealthy for you, they can also make panic attacks worse and make it more difficult for you to deal with stressful situations. Switching over to a diet that mainly consists of raw, unprocessed foods can give you the energy and focus you need to be able to handle anxiety. Proteins and foods that are low in saturated fats should also be part of your diet.

In order to treat panic attack, you might have to cut back or completely cut out certain drinks. Caffeine is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to substances that can worsen your condition and make attacks more severe and harder to manage. If you don’t think you can handle eliminating coffee or soda from your diet, try switching to decaffeinated products. Be aware though that even these contain small amounts of caffeine. Since this substance increases anxiety, limiting the amount you drink can make a drastic difference in your ability to handle stress.

Like caffeine, alcohol is another substance that can compromise your effectiveness when dealing with stressful situations. Your inability to focus or handle anxiety in a calm, rational manner while under the influence of alcohol can lead to more frequent and more severe panic attacks. Do you love the beauty and color of flowers but cringe at the thought of the maintenance required for their upkeep? If your colorful blooms have a tendency to turn brown and crunchy from neglect in the hot Austin sun, there may be some flowers made just for you. Flora native or adapted to the Austin area thrive where others perish, resisting drought, pests and other hazards. Just choose your plants wisely and you can have fabulous landscaping for your property with little work.

There are many benefits to growing native plants. In addition to saving on water and fertilizer you save on time by choosing plants that thrive in the unique climate of Austin Texas. Your gardening is also more enjoyable when you are not fighting mother nature in an attempt to grow plants that are not suited to the Texas Climate. It is also nice to help maintain the original ecosystem of your locale by promoting local plants and flowers.

Perennials are an essential part of a vibrant landscape, and a beautiful choice for any Texas flowerbed is Cedar Sage. A shade lover, Cedar Sage has bright red spiky flowers that bloom spring through summer and can bring a pop of color to an otherwise gloomy spot in your yard. Sage comes in several other varieties, too, including Majestic Sage, Mealy Blue Sage and Mexican Sage bush-all of which produce beautiful flowers and require very little water, just like Cedar Sage.

Trailing Lantana is another great choice, especially when used as a ground cover. It is very tolerant of poor conditions, highly drought resistant, and its lavender flowers are very attractive to butterflies.

Purple Cone Flowers, also know as Echinacea, require a little more water than the previous plants, but they are nonetheless exceptional specimens for an Austin garden. These daisy-like flowers are a Texas native and produce violet or white blooms. Preferring sun or partial shade, they can be planted almost anywhere.

Mexican Honeysuckle is another low-water plant. It displays its orange flowers spring to frost, attracting hummingbirds with its sweet smell. It only requires an occasional pruning to encourage full growth.

Ornamental grasses are another option for sprucing up your landscape, and there are many hardy varieties to choose from, such as Big Muhly, Little Bluestem and Dwarf Fountain Grass. Some grasses can be quite invasive, so be careful where you plant them, because they will thrive and take over.

These are only a few of the many ideal plants for your Texas landscape. There are a multitude of choices available out there, so next time you go to a nursery, make sure you do your homework first or ask the people running the nursery which plants and flowers are native to Texas. The city of Austin has worked to promote a green and environmentally friendly city. The city of Austin has a Grow Green plant list featuring native and adapted landscape plants that thrive in Texas. By planting smart you can save water, fertilizer and time.

As you probably know, a chicken coop is an essential part of raising backyard chickens.
It will provide your flock with warm shelter and a safe place to eat and sleep. However,
not many of us want to invest in a pre-made chicken coop for many reasons such as:
inflated cost and the hassle of delivery or bringing it home. Therefore, I have written
this article to help you build a backyard chicken coop fast and easy. If you follow these 5 easy steps, you
will be able to construct a strong and durable backyard chicken coop that will provide excellent shelter for your chickens and keep them safe from predators.

Step 1: Plan Ahead of Time.

If you want to build a backyard chicken coop with the least amounts of setbacks, you must PLAN ahead of time. Some things to think about before beginning your construction are: How many chickens will inhabit the coop?, What size are the chickens, large standards or bantams? How many nests will you provide the hens with? How many feeders and waterers will you have available? How many windows will your chicken coop require to give enough sunlight to your flock? Will you be constructing a chicken run with easy access into and out of the coop? You see, there are various questions that need to be answered before you build a backyard chicken coop because you may find out too late that the coop you built was not sufficient enough to keep your chickens happy and safe.

Step 2: Choose your Terrain.

Once you have answered all your pre-building questions, the next step is to choose a terrain where you
will build a backyard chicken coop in. It is very important that you choose an area that is wide enough for your coop to fit with plenty of space around it for a chicken run or for you to maneuver around. You do not want to build a coop where you do not have easy access around its perimeter. Try to choose a terrain where it receives direct sunlight and far from heavy bushes or weeds where snakes, rodents, and other predators may reside in.

Step 3: Sketch out your Design on Paper.

When attempting to build a backyard chicken coop, do not go at it with a concept in your head. This can lead to disaster. Make sure you sketch out your coop on paper, even if you’re not an artist, and cover every angle including a top view of the roof and a sketch of the inside. If this is your first time building a backyard chicken coop, you shouldn’t go for an architectural masterpiece, but rather start out with a simple chicken coop first just big enough for your flock and as you gain experience, then go for something of a greater scale.

Step 4: Gather all your Materials.

Before you build a backyard chicken coop, make an effort to collect all the materials you will need so that you won’t have to take unexpected trips to and from the hardware or lumber store. A good example of materials you will need are: wood (2 x 4), concrete cinder blocks, chicken wire or fence wire, insulation strips, and ofcourse nails, screws, saw and hammer. While these are your most common materials, only you
will know exactly what you need when you complete steps 1 and 3 and actually plan ahead of time and sketch out your coop design from every angle.

Step 5: Build it.

It is now time to build a backyard chicken coop. You have done all your planning ahead of time. You have chosen a terrain convenient to maneuver around with excellent sunlight and free from predators. You have sketched out your chicken coop design on paper and you have gathered all your materials. Now all you have to do is put it together.

Some things to remember: Provide plenty of ventilation through screened windows, bury your outside chicken wire along the coop’s borders about a foot deep to prevent predators from digging in, and if you live in cold climates, make sure to properly insulate the roof and insides of the coop.

I hope these 5 steps will help you build a backyard chicken coop with greater ease and success.
However, these are only a few guidelines and there is so much more information you should learn before you actually build a backyard chicken coop.
